Google Ads chargeback-related billing restriction
Google Ads documentation › Billing & Payments › Billing Holds & Suspensions
A chargeback-related billing restriction concerns a reversed or disputed charge and its relationship to the account balance. Distinguish an unauthorized-charge incident from a dispute over a legitimate advertising balance.
Confirm the issue
- Identify the charge, customer ID and bank dispute reference.
- Reconcile the reversal with Google’s billing record.
- Record whether the charge was authorized or part of a security incident.
- Read the specific account notice and required response.
Review and correction workflow
Create a factual timeline covering the original charge, dispute, reversal and account consequence. Do not describe a genuine unauthorized incident as an ordinary unpaid bill, or a legitimate balance reversal as a confirmed security breach without evidence.
Use the official billing or security route appropriate to the facts. Coordinate with the bank and account owner while keeping the evidence consistent. This guide does not recommend withdrawing a valid dispute or making an unrelated payment without reconciliation.
Illustrative review example
An unfamiliar charge is traced to another account the business manages. That finding changes the investigation compared with a confirmed compromised account.
Is a refund request inside Google Ads the same as a bank chargeback?
No. They are different processes with different effects. Identify which event actually occurred.
Verify the outcome
Keep the original notice, the evidence reviewed and the action taken in one dated record. Confirm the resulting status in the affected account or item. A completed internal checklist is evidence of your review; it does not override Google’s decision.
Related checks and next steps
For a confirmed account incident, use unauthorized-activity suspension guidance. Keep a cash-refund question separate with Refunds & Credits.
