Google Ads misleading representation and affiliation
Google Ads documentation › Policy Issues › Misleading & Unsupported Claims
Misleading representation concerns inaccurate or obscured business identity, affiliation or qualifications. The review question is whether users understand who they are dealing with and what relationship the advertiser actually has with other organizations.
Confirm the issue
- Identify the business name used in ads, pages and enquiries.
- Check official, approved, partner and licensed claims.
- Document reseller, affiliate or lead-generation roles.
- Compare credentials with the wording visible to users.
Review and correction workflow
Map the user journey from advertisement to contact or purchase. At each step, record who appears to provide the service and who really does. Correct ambiguity where the presentation implies a relationship or qualification the business cannot establish.
Use evidence relevant to the exact notice. If a relationship is legitimate, describe its scope accurately rather than expanding it into a general endorsement. If the decision is disputed, explain why the current presentation is clear.
Illustrative review example
A comparison site collects enquiries but presents itself as the provider being compared. The disclosure and service journey require review, not only the logo.
Can permission to mention a brand resolve every identity issue?
No. Brand permission and accurate representation of the advertiser’s role are separate questions.
Verify the outcome
Keep the original notice, the evidence reviewed and the action taken in one dated record. Confirm the resulting status in the affected account or item. A completed internal checklist is evidence of your review; it does not override Google’s decision.
Related checks and next steps
For a brand-use restriction, compare trademarks in ad text. If the decision is an account suspension, use misrepresentation suspension guidance for the wider review.
